Mulching
A mulch laid between 5 and 10cm thick over the bare soil will help the garden to retain heat and moisture, suppress weed growth and, if an organic mulch is used, will improve soil fertility.
Mulching options include stones and pebbles, homemade compost, well rotted manure, bark or chipped trees. Some are more decorative than others and can be laid over weed mat to further improve the maintenance aspect.
